Cultures- Intercultural Communication

Chapter 12

Key Words- Traditions, Differences, Empathy

Sharing information, feelings and ideas between people from different cultural backgrounds. This communication is not only a language skill but requires understanding and respect for cultural norms, behaviors, and values. Having empathy, respect and a willingness to understand each other. Based on the video “Cross-Cultural Communication; The Culture of Time” it shows differences in cultures perceptions and how this impacts the way people interact and communicate with one another.

Based on the image it shows people from different parts of the world holding hands together to represent a connection. Celebrating each other’s cultures and customs in order to live, work, and grow together. No matter the race, or ethnicity they are able to come together and respect each other.

Living in New York City and going to a CUNY, we come to realize how it is filled with people with different traditions, religions and languages. It has students, and faculty from over 200 countries and 130 different languages. Both inside and outside the classroom, we continue to work together and create a level of respect and openness towards cultural differences. Joining in on cultural holidays, attending community events at college events, there is a shared appreciation for the richness of diversity.
