Communicating with words is all about exchanging information using a written language or speaking. Conveying ideas, feelings, or even intentions which help to develop relationships and understanding. Based on “Birth of a New Language in Nicaragua” it showed that even though the kids did not know American Sign Language at the time they had to create their own form of communication. A unique way of understanding and connecting to each other from scratch.

This cartoon image not only shows American Sign language but common expressions used by everyday people in order to express themselves. Sending love through heart signals, a thumbs up, or even saying you’re okay using your fingers. Encouraging people that there are many ways of communication which can also be visual.

This is related to my work environment since I work in a predominantly Spanish speaking neighborhood and I only speak English. I have to get creative in order to communicate with clients. Whether that’s using google translate on my phone, pointing to things or trying to communicate slowly in order to better understand them. Just like the children in Nicaragua I’ve learned that connection goes further than language, it’s about the effort, empathy and finding ways to be understood.
