Communication has changed over the centuries. In the 20th century public speaking was seen in a different light. Public speaking expanded further than persuasive techniques and scholars started to speak to their audience through social science methods, adding an emphasis on audience analysis. Additionally, message effectiveness and communication anxiety. This way speakers were able to explain how and why messages worked in public context, in politics, media and education. 

Based on this editorial image, the speaker seems to be afraid of speaking to this large audience. Looking at the life preserver ring around his waist, the amount of sweat he is perspiring and the puddle it created at his feats show that he is fearful. Even though he has the words right in front of him, based on his body language and facial expression, public speaking may not be the best form of communication. 

As someone who used to struggle with social anxiety I can relate to this image. However, taking a public speaking class in college I learned how to confidently speak to an audience. Growing more confidence when addressing an audience and everyday people. The different techniques of speech writing, managing nervousness and connecting to the audience.
